On a new acanthocephalan family and a new order from birds in Vietnam.

During November, 2000, a collection of acanthocephalans from birds in the Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam included one new species and new genus in a new family and new order. Pyrirhynchus heterospinus n. gen., n. sp. (Pyrirhynchidae n. fam.: Heteramorphidea: new order: Acanthocephala) is described from Actitis hypoleucos (Linnaeus, 1758)(common sandpiper). The new family combines characters from Polymorphidae and Heteracanthocephalidae, and includes new features. Specimens of the new species are distinguished from those of Polymorphidae and/or Heteracanthocephalidae by their long cylindrical trunk, pyriform proboscis with hooks much larger ventrally, brain at base of the receptacle, very short and stubby lemnisci, tubular cement glands, and elliptoid eggs with concentric shells. A detailed study of the armature of the proboscis hooks is also included.
