DISCOVERY OF A NEW GENUS OF DACTYLOGYRIDAE (MONOGENOIDEA) AND FOUR NEW SPECIES OF UROCLEIDOIDES (MIZELLE AND PRICE 1964) KRITSKY, THATCHER AND BOEGER, 1986 PARASITIZING THE GILLS OF PANAMANIAN FRESHWATER FISHES.

During an investigation of gill monogenoidean parasites from freshwater fishes in Central Panama 4 new species of Urocleidoides (sensu stricto) and another new dactylogyrid species belonging to a new genus were found: Urocleidoides cultellus n. sp., Urocleidoides visiofortis n. sp. and Hypopomidella advenai n. gen. and n. sp from the gymnotiform Brachyhypopomus occidentalis (Hypopomidae); Urocleidoides neotropicus n. sp. and Urocleidoides piriatiu n. sp. from the characiforms Saccodon dariensis (Parodontidae) and Ctenolucius beani (Ctenoluciidae) respectively. Hypopomidella n. gen. is proposed for its new species which has overlapping gonads (testis posterodorsal to the ovary), a sinistral vaginal aperture, a copulatory complex consisting of a copulatory organ with counterclockwise rings unarticulated to a simple accessory piece, hooks of similar size with depressed thumbs, and dorsal and ventral anchor/bar complex. Two previously considered species (Urocleidoides carapus [Mizelle, Kritsky and Crane, 1968] and Urocleidoides gymnotus [Mizelle, Kritsky and Crane, 1968]) in incertae sedis within Urocleidoides Mizelle and Price, 1964, from South American gymnotiforms (Gymnotidae) are now considered as valid species within Urocleidoides (sensu stricto). Our findings represent the first known Urocleidoides and Hypopomidella species from these fishes in Central America and demonstrate that are morphologically linked to their South American congeners.
